Over the past five years, there has been an overall increase in violent crime in Grand Terrace, according to the 2017 Annual Report issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SDCSD).
Since 2013, Grand Terrace has had an increase in several violent and property crime categories such as, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, burglary and larceny, according to the SBCSD Annual Report.
“There is no reason for residents of Grand Terrace to be concerned,” said Jodi Miller, SBCSD Public Information Officer.
The Annual Report, which is published each year and provides overall crime data for San Bernardino County, shows that Grand Terrace has had a 50 percent increase in the number of aggravated assaults with 10 reported in 2016 and 15 in 2017.
If a community member is assaulted or witnesses an assault, Miler notes, “report the incident immediately to local law enforcement.” “Also, be a good witness, take note of the suspect and vehicle description.”
The report also shows that the largest overall increase in crime reported in Grand Terrace is the number of rapes, with one reported in 2013, one in 2014, one in 2015, three in 2016 and eight in 2017.
However, there has been a 40 percent decrease in the amount of grand theft auto within the past five years with 59 reported in 2013 and 31 in 2017, according to the SBCSD Annual Report.
“Citizens should be diligent and always lock their vehicles,” said Miller. “Also, do not leave items of value visible in your vehicle such as, cell phones, computers or bags from recent purchases. Suspects are known to walk along parked cars for crimes of opportunity.”
There has been an increase every year in the number of larcenies, theft of personal property, crimes reported since 2013 going from 146 reported in 2013 to 169 in 2017.
In 2018, there have been at least 15 crime reports involving Grand Terrace, with the latest Grand Terrace press release from the SBCSD documenting an attempted robbery, which resulted in a physical assault on the victim who was able to repel the attack, on April 6, 2018, according to the SBCSD.
During a May 2018 council meeting, the Grand Terrace City Council approved a resolution that allows them to place a Parcel Tax Measure before the voters of the city at the Nov. 6, 2018 General Municipal Election to allow residents an opportunity to vote on funding an additional 40-hour officer.
Grand Terrace contracts with the SBCSD for law enforcement services and the Parcel Tax Measure would end following the tax-year 2023-2024 and has an estimated net annual revenue of $356,000, costing $80 per single-family dwelling and $45.60 per multi-family dwelling unit, according to Grand Terrace City Council.
