Dr. Amy Hayton is the recipient of the first annual VA Loma Linda Healthcare System “Teacher of the Year Award” for academic year 2017-2018.

A workgroup of the Graduate Resident Education Committee (GREC) unanimously selected Dr. Hayton from 109 nominations submitted from 45 different faculty members this year.  The GREC selection committee reviewed Dr. Hayton’s teaching skills, her learner-centered approach to education, professionalism, performance as a role model, mentor acumen and enthusiasm for teaching.  Other criteria included Dr. Layton’s exemplary care and concern for patients, accessibility, approachability, clinical excellence and evidence-based practice.

“As we strive to be courageous healers of our Veterans, our learners are catching what we do and say,” said Dr. Hayton.  “Future physicians are trained every day when we advocate for our patients, feel what they feel, spend the extra time, examine thoroughly and most of all offer hope.”

“Remember your calling and be who you are; your day to day choices to be compassionate in the face of many pressures and time constraints can help inspire our learners and patients.”

In reviewing Dr. Hayton’s nomination package, the selection committee noted “the depth of our trainees’ appreciation for your dedication to education and their personal well-being, your outstanding role modeling and your compassionate care of our patients.  The students really appreciate your personal interest in them and the feedback and professional development that you provide them.  Clearly, you have made an indelible impression on them that will last throughout their careers.  I have shared comments from your nomination below.”

Dr. Hayton will be presented with a plaque at an upcoming monthly awards ceremony. Notice of Dr. Hayton’s ccomplishment will also be shared with her VA Service Chief and the Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
