April 7 through 13 is National Volunteer Week and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will use the opportunity to thank more than 67,000 citizen volunteers who give back to Veterans every day at local VA medical facilities.

VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHCS) will recognize the 716 volunteers for the 88,940 hours they contributed toward caring for Veterans, driving, directing, sitting, serving, comforting and counseling on a regular basis.

National Volunteer Week also presents an opportunity for other citizens to join the ranks of volunteers serving Veterans.  There are as many ways to volunteer as there are willing people to do so.  For instance, (INSERT impressive statistics or unique story about a highly visible volunteer at your facility).  Also, (highlight another program at your facility where Volunteers have been particularly impressive or effective.)

”Being a Voluntary Service Chief is the most rewarding position that I’ve ever had, “said John Bischler, Chief of Volunteer Services, VALLHCS. “Our volunteers enhance the experience of Veterans and are so excited to do volunteer their most precious commodity, their time.  The VALLHCS has the best patients in the world, and we are always looking for more volunteers who can come out for any amount of time to volunteer. If you want to feel appreciated by a Veteran who is grateful for the assistance we provide, come out and volunteer with us. Call us at 909-583-6011 to start volunteering.”

While National Volunteer Week kicks off April 15, VA is inviting everyone in the community to explore how they can use their skills and unique assets to thank Veterans with service of their own.  No medical experience is necessary, and volunteers are encouraged to share ideas how they would like to give back using their unique skills.
