Superheroes from books and movies made appearances at Moreno Valley Unified School District elementary schools Wednesday as part of the yearly tradition to kick off the new school year.

Board of Education Vice President Jesús Holguín, Clerk Cleveland Johnson and Member Gary Baugh were on hand to hand out pencils along with district administrators and community volunteers to encourage students to succeed on their first day.

Some of the characters at MVUSD schools included Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Superman, and Pikachu. Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, also known as Captain America, was spotted giving encouraging words to students arriving at Armada Elementary School as well.

“This tradition started with our former Superintendent Dr. White and quickly became a popular first-day activity,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, “It is great to see all of the support from our community to welcome our students back for ‘Our Greatest Year!’”

Middle and High Schools also held special activities to start the year off on the right foot. At Mountain View Middle School, staff created signs and cheered on the students as they entered the gates. Canyon Springs High School held a back-to-school rally on their new football field and held walking tours for their new 9th-grade students to get acquainted with campus. Valley View High School also held a pep rally in their gym.

“It is important that our students feel welcome in our schools,” said Board of Education Vice President Jesús Holguín, “It was wonderful to see the smiling faces of students arriving at school and meet our parents, who are vital partners with us in the education of their children.”
