Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is supporting “National Stop the Bleed Day” on March 31, by offering a free workshop to San Bernardino County residents (and county employees) that will cover life-saving measures that bystanders can perform to save a life in traumatic situations, in an active shooter situation, or a multi-casualty event. The workshop is free of charge and will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Oak and Sequoia Rooms on the first floor of the hospital, located at 400 North Pepper Avenue in Colton.

“Stop the Bleed Day” is a national campaign started by the White House and sponsored through the American College of Surgeons (ACS), to address the most common cause of preventable trauma death in the U.S., uncontrolled bleeding. During the workshop at ARMC, Bleeding Control (B-CON) instructors will cover topics such as bleeding control, tourniquet use, and pressure dressings.

“The public can become actively involved to prevent death from uncontrollable bleeding, and just as we certify people in first aid and CPR, also knowing how to stop severe bleeding would benefit anyone in a life-threatening situation,” Sharon Brown. “Until EMS teams can arrive on scene, the critical first few minutes can be the difference between life and death, be it a car accident, gun or knife injury, a natural disaster, or mass casualty shooting situation.”

The top cause of preventable death in trauma is bleeding. Quick bleeding control is paramount in such situations to survive. In fact, 20 percent of those who have died from traumatic injuries could have survived if bleeding were controlled properly.
