Driving around California can be a fun adventure. You can experience different cities and see what they all have to offer. One big city that a lot of people hear about is San Bernardino. Ranked 17th in California, San Bernardino hosts a variety of businesses that make it special.

Heading west on Base Line Street, many drivers with their windows open can smell the sweet taste of barbeque ribs and peach cobbler. They can follow that smell all the way to Carrie’s BBQ & Soul Food. It is well-known for its divine food that makes your mouth water when you walk through the door.

As delicious as their food sounds they are not exempt from the power of the San Bernardino Health inspector. On July 13, 2018, a San Bernardino Health inspector visited the restaurant for a consultation inspection. After reviewing, there were immediate safety hazards that could not go unnoticed and that their health permit was suspended.

Here are some comments from the report:

-The outdoor BBQ is located in the parking lot without building and safety approval.

-The 3-compartment sink was observed to be undersized and unable to fit the larger utensils and dishes.

-When asked to turn exhaust hood on for testing purposes, management explained that they have no way to turn the exhaust hood on.

-Management explained that exhaust hood and ANSUL system are no longer functional and must be entirely replaced.

-Plans are required at this time, and facility is closed and permit is suspended due to safety hazard

At the time this article was written the restaurant has not been reopened. Hopefully, everyone will be able to taste their famous barbeque food again.

Now as drivers head down Mt. Vernon Avenue they can pass by a store called Best Market. This place is not only known for its delicious meat at the deli station but has a pizzeria and is a grocery store. There is something in this market for everyone to enjoy.

In the early mornings of July 20th, 2018, the San Bernardino Health Department came to the Best Market for a reinspection. They visited Best Market before on July 11th and found vermin activity. The purpose of the reinspection on July 20th was to see if the vermin problem was addressed. Although they observed no vermin sightings, the inspector did find other issues in certain areas of the store. In result, the Best Market’s health permit was suspended, and they were closed until all issues are fixed.

Here are some comments from the health inspector report:

-Maintain facility free of vermin.

-Observed live German cockroaches in critical areas.

-Manager was instructed to contact their pest control company for treatment. Manager was also instructed to clean and sanitize the facility after treatment.

-Supervisorial review may occur today 7/20/18 at 3pm if facility is able to provide pest control receipts from today's date.

If Best Market could provide receipts later that day then they could reopen. The health department came back later on July 20th and Best Market’s health permit was reinstated.

Here are some comments from the reinspection later that day:

-The purpose of this reinspection was to verify that no vermin activity was present at the facility.

-The following was observed on this date: No vermin activity was observed at this time.

-Pest control company Dewey came to treat today 7/20/18 A supervisory review was conducted on this date

-Facility is now approved to serve open food.

Health inspections are beneficial not just for the business in question, but for the public as well. It helps the business be the best it could be in terms of safety and health.
