Redlands PD Present for Several Peaceful Demonstrations

On June 1, 2020, Chief of Police, Chris Catren, took to Facebook to address the recent peaceful protests, violence and looting in cities all throughout the United States.

"As we witness the turbulence in communities across the nation as well as those very close to home, I want to reassure the community that the Redlands Police Department is continuing to monitor the situation, to develop and adjust strategies for dealing with threats to the public safety and welfare, and, most importantly, to have a dialogue with all of the members of our community that focuses on dignity, respect and understanding of your concerns and grievances," Catren said.

According to Catren, on Sunday May 31 ,2020, the Redlands Police Department, along with partners in the Redlands Fire Department, were present for several peaceful demonstrations that were held in various parts of the City, including Citrus Plaza and Historic Downtown Redlands. The goal was to both protect public safety and property, but also to ensure that the constitutional right to free speech and assembly was also protected. The officers met with the organizers of the protests ahead of time and came to a mutual agreement on these principles. Each of the demonstrations was conducted peacefully.

"Unfortunately, late Sunday, groups of lawless individuals took advantage of the legitimate protests and began looting and burning businesses in our neighboring city of San Bernardino," Catren said. Redlands Police responded to provide aid to San Bernardino Police.

"While we were there, RPD received reports that looters had begun breaking into businesses on the west end of Redlands, at California Street and Redlands Boulevard. Redlands Police officers were deployed to the area, where one business was broken into. Later a second business was also broken into on Industrial Park Drive. In that instance, Redlands Police arrived in time to detain the suspects," Catren said.

Redlands Police maintained a visible presence in target areas throughout the night and no other damage was reported, according to Catren.

"We want to reassure our residents and businesses that we are continuing every effort to protect everyone’s rights during this challenging period. If you have thoughts or concerns please contact me at ccatren@redlandspolice.org."
