The latest crime statistics report shows that there has been an overall decrease in crime over the past five years in Moreno Valley, according to a 2017-18 report issued by the Criminal Justice Information Services Division of the FBI.

On February 25, 2019, the FBI’s semiannual crime report was released, which showed that “both violent crime and property crime in the first half of 2018” has declined in the United States compared to the first half of the previous year.

The report, which offers data from January 2018 through June 2018, contains data from over 14,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S., including the city of Moreno Valley.

Comparing the FBI’s crime report from five years ago to its current release, the City of Moreno Valley has experienced an overall decrease in all 10 crime categories included in the report. The crime categories include violent crime, murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, property crime, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

In the past five years, one of the largest overall decreases in Moreno Valley’s crime was property crime. In 2014, Moreno Valley had 6,410 reports of property crime and in 2018, there was more than half a decrease to 2,933.

Despite the overall decrease in crime over the last five years, when comparing the 2018 crime report to 2017, the City of Moreno Valley has had increases in certain crime categories.

In 2017, there were 372 reports of violent crime and in 2018 there was a slight increase to 396. In addition, aggravated assault saw an increase when compared to last year. In 2017, there were 185 reports of aggravated assault and in 2018, there was 231. The 2018 report only includes data from January 2018 through June 2018, thus indicating violent crime and aggravated assault in just the first half of 2018 has already surpassed the total amount from 2017.

Other categories that Moreno Valley has experienced a slight increase from the previous year was murder and rape. In 2017, there were 6 reported murders and 7 in 2018, according to the January 2018-June 2018 crime report. Also, there was a slight increase in rape. In 2017, there were 15 reports and in 2018, there were 17 reported rapes.

It is important to note that the City of Moreno Valley has also had a steady increase in population over the past five years. In 2014, the population total was around 202,000 and in 2017 (the last available data) was approximately 207,000. City News Group will continue to update and report on local crime.
