MVUSD Students Recognized at Scholarship Breakfast

Valley View High School senior Josiah Jones and Vista Del Lago High School senior Lynayah Melendez were recognized at the 7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast as scholarship recipients for winning the essay competition.

Josiah is ranked 11th in his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.6. He is involved in multiple extracurricular activities, is captain of the mock trial team, secretary of the National Honor Society, member of Link Crew and the Educational Talent Search as well as participant on the School Site Council. He thanks TRIO for consistently pushing him to complete scholarship and college applications.

Lynayah holds a 3.8 GPA. She loves to stay active, values health and always tries to leave a situation better than before. She is captain of the girls wrestling team and has also participated in basketball, dance and track and field. She says, the stronger your mentality, the greater things you will accomplish in life. She plans to be the first in her family to go to college and obtain a degree. She is also interested in the Navy or Air Force as a possible career path. She is a member of the Upward Bound Math and Science Program, supports women getting into STEM-based careers as a way to create diversity in the workplace.

"Our students are just phenomenal," said Darrell A. Peeden, Vice President of the Board. "They are so talented and well-deserving of the scholarships. I am so proud of them and impressed at their level of engagement and involvement in our schools. I look forward to hearing great things from them as they move forward."

Moreno Valley College student and Vista Del Lago High School Alum Jakai Drayton was also recognized and shared his winning speech with the entire audience.

"Learning about our alumni like Jakai is always a great pleasure," said Board Member Cleveland Johnson. "There are so many different pathways that our students take after graduating from our schools. I am very proud to know that he is a product of our school district and that he is succeeding at Moreno Valley College."
