Herbie, a Moreno Valley Police Department K-9, injured on duty while taking down a suspect over the weekend made his return to the job today. He was back in good health, stronger than ever and giving a presentation to 2nd grade students at Box Springs Elementary School.
Herbie and MVPD K-9 Handler Kory Murphy visited the school for their previously scheduled visit. It just happened that it was his first day back on duty after being injured on Sunday taking down a domestic violence suspect.
The visit corresponded with the 2nd grade curriculum for the week that included the subject of "How do we care for our pets."
"This is a great example of our partnership with the Moreno Valley Police Department," said Board President Susan Smith, "Students were able to interact with both officers and the dogs in a positive way. That helps build our community. We are happy Herbie was healthy and able to make the visit after his recent injury.
The students were able to see a demonstration by Herbie and got a chance to see him up close as he walked through the rows of students.
The Moreno Valley Police Department has received an outpouring of support after his injury with residents asking how they can help. Officer Murphy suggested donations to the Riverside County Sheriff's K-9 Association, which helps with retired K-9 vet bills and more.
