Mountain View Middle School is one of 22 California middle schools recognized in the 2017-18 Schools to Watch - Taking Center Stage program, announced this week by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
The designation recognizes high-performing middle schools for their academic excellence, social equity, and responsiveness to their students. Mountain View Middle School joins three other Moreno Valley Unified School District middle schools (Landmark, Vista Heights, Sunnymead) that have received the designation in the past five years.
“These schools are outstanding examples of how educational innovations can keep students engaged and learning throughout a transitional time in their lives,” Torlakson said in a news release.
As a responsibility of being selected, the schools are expected to guide and mentor staff at other middle schools, present professional development on their programs at state and national conferences and provide yearly updates on their academic performance and improvement.
“Middle school is an important time for adolescents, and I am proud to see the hard work of Mountain View Middle School’s teachers, administrators and Principal Jon Black be recognized for meeting the challenge of helping our students be successful,” said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora.
“Congratulations to Mountain View Middle School for their work to ensure students are growing and progressing both academically and socially,” Board of Education President Susan Smith said.
The Schools to Watch program is sponsored by the California Department of Education, California League of Middle Schools and the California Middle Grades Alliance. Mountain View and the other schools will be recognized at the California Middle Grades Alliance annual luncheon on March 1 in Sacramento.
