Dear Moreno Valley Residents,
This week, on Dec. 3, the City of Moreno Valley marked its 35th birthday! It was on Dec. 3, 1984, that the communities of Moreno, Sunnymead and Edgemont merged to become the city we know and love. With the great eastward migration from Los Angeles in the 1980s and ‘90s, the new City of Moreno Valley quickly became Riverside County’s second-largest city, and so it remains today as we continue to grow.
We are a young city, and our youth comes with great energy and enthusiasm, occasional growing pains, and a consistently optimistic outlook, which fuels our firm belief that tomorrow can be even better than today. And as your Mayor, and as a MoVal native just about the same age as my hometown, I am one of those optimistic believers.
All my life, I’ve witnessed a great deal of change in our city, almost all of it positive and promising. Today, for example, a greater percentage than ever of our working adults have opportunities to work right here at home instead of having to commute an hour or more to jobs in far-flung Orange and Los Angeles counties. That’s one of the most positive changes of all, and it’s a clear sign that young MoVal is finally coming into its own and creating its own destiny, and that our future is bright.
So Happy 35th Birthday, Moreno Valley – the city where dreams soar!
