Back on July 25, 2017, the council of Grand Terrace approved a resolution to re-establish a Parks and Recreation committee within the City.  The resolution basically stated that the city council determined that there was a need for a Parks and Recreation committee to provide advisory direction for the council regarding the development and maintenance of park areas and the different recreation facilities for residents to enjoy and utilize while protecting and preserving the environment for future generations to participate in.

The committee would be tasked to advise the council regarding the establishment of programs and services that are consistent with the resident's needs, interests and that would add to their health, sense of well-being and sense of immunity.

Under Exhibit A of the resolutions, the purpose of the Parks and Recreation Committee will be to develop local opportunities to meet the leisure needs as approved by the council.  The Parks and Recreation Committee shall consist of five (5) members.  All appointments shall be made by minute record of the City Council and shall continue in effect until a successor is appointed.  Each member of the council shall appoint one (1) member of the Parks and Recreation Committee.

Staff provided general guidelines for the Park and Recreation Committee to try and clarify the mission of the committee.  The guidelines provided information to prospective committee members that allow them to assess the committee’s mission and time requirements.  The guidelines also pointed the committee in the direction of reviewing use of organized recreation programs use within the existing park system to insure organized sports and other park activities co-exist.

At the May 10, 2018 Park & Recreation meeting, the advisory committee approved the addition of the Light Up Grand Terrace Committee to serve as a sub-committee to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee.  On June 28, 2018, the City Council recommended that the Light Up Grand Terrace Volunteer Team be officially names as a sub-committee to the Advisory Committee.  Members of the Light Up Volunteer Team are as follows:

Jody Barnett

Frank’e Byma

Julia Firnkoess

Michelle Greer

Yvette Kecskes

Chastdei Kotsay

Nicole Littlefield

Jackie Mitchell
