Getting to Know Me

By Ken Henderson , City Council

In November, Grand Terrace Voters will be selecting two Council Members and the City’s Mayor.  I believe the contrasts between the candidates running for these positions could not be greater on multiple levels.  It is up to you, the voters, to compare and contrast the personal and professional qualities of those running for office and vote accordingly.

My bio-sketch below is intended to assist you in making what I believe to be one of the most consequential electoral decisions in recent history.  Choosing wisely will be critical to the future of “The Blue Mountain City”.

Kenneth J. Henderson, Council Member

•Appointed Council Member December, 2017

•Current Term - December 2017 to November 2018

Bio:

Ken Henderson is a long-time Grand Terrace resident (34+ years) and a retired public service executive, having served 37 years in various executive leadership roles for five cities and one joint powers authority. After retiring in 2012, Ken was called back into service by the Grand Terrace City Council, first as Chairman of its Budget Advisory Committee and, subsequently, as Interim City Manager from January 2014 to January 2015. A summary of Ken’s accomplishments as Grand Terrace Interim City Manager can be found here: https://www.grandterrace-ca.gov/UserFiles/Servers/Server_12337255/File/Government/Elected%20Officials/Snapshot-4923.pdf .

In addition to his city manager tenures, Ken, over the course of his career, also served as Assistant City Manager, Economic Development Director, Redevelopment Executive Director and Community Development Director for three of the five cities for which he worked.

In light of the resignation of a former Council Member, Ken and Cecilia, his wife of 28 years, decided he would participate in the interviews the City Council conducted as part of the process of filling the vacant City Council position. As a result of this competitive process, Ken was selected on the first ballot to fill the vacant City Council position.

Interests/Hobbies:

Ken is an avid fan of professional basketball, professional football and professional automobile racing. In fact, Ken is a fan of virtually any contest involving speed, including track and field and powerboat racing and he has carved out quite a reputation of sorts in international car enthusiast circles.

Both Ken and Cecilia enjoy traveling and reading. Ken’s particular favorites involve biographies, historical novels and “anything by Tom Clancy”.

Charitable Giving:

Following in the footsteps of their parents, Ken and Cecilia have given to the following organizations, causes and funds (partial list) on regular and one-time bases:

   • Robert & Anna Henderson Vallejo Central Seventh-Day Adventist

      Church Scholarship Fund;

   • Napa Christian Academy Tuition Supplement Program;

   • Catholic Charities;

   • Habitat for Humanity;

   • Blue Mountain Conservancy;

   • Grand Terrace Dog Park;

   • Vietnam Veterans of America;

   • Disabled American Veterans of California

   • Wounded Warriors Project;

   • Smiletrain; and,

   • Carolyn Collins “Giving Closet” (from the Gail Henderson estate)

Committees:

San Bernardino County Gang & Drug Task Force, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools - Representative

Colton Joint Unified School District Community Cabinet – Alternate

If you want knowledge, experience, integrity and a history of demonstrated success, please vote for me on November 6.
