In March, organist John Doty joined the music staff at the First United Methodist Church located at 1 E. Olive Avenue in Redlands.

A native of Indiana, Doty recently relocated to Southern California.  In his home state, Doty served as a church organist for nine years including playing at two churches simultaneously most of that time.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to play for a congregation with a deep appreciation for quality organ music,” said Doty, “and I look forward to contributing to the already strong music program.”  He will also serve as accompanist for the Sanctuary Choir directed by Roger Duffer.

“John will be a great addition to our music ministry team,” said Pastor J.T. Greenleaf.  “His musical talent is obvious, but it was the positive energy he brings to the role that set John apart from other candidates.”

Doty earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana and was employed as a music educator at New Castle, Indiana middle and high schools for ten years.   He also currently works as Assistant Store Manager and Lessons Coordinator and Instructor at Bertrand’s School of Music in San Bernardino.

The church’s Beckerath pipe organ was custom-manufactured in Germany to be compatible with the acoustics of the congregation’s sanctuary building which was completed in 1971 after a fire destroyed the previous structure in 1967.  The organ was dedicated on Easter Sunday in 1973.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, Redlands First United Methodist Church worship services are being livestreamed on Sundays at 9:30 am via the church’s YouTube channel: Redlands First UMC.
