SAN BERNARDINO>> On Friday, March 10, St. Bernardine Medical Center recognized six local nonprofit organizations for their efforts to improve the health and quality of life in the Inland Empire. The community grant awards ceremony took place from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the Rezek Centre on the St. Bernardine Medical Center campus, located at 2101 N. Waterman Avenue, in San Bernardino, California. The Community Grants Program began in 1990, when Dignity Health started to encourage hospitals to expand their health care mission beyond the hospital campus. Since then, Dignity Health has awarded $64 million in grants. This year, selected organizations were honored for addressing the greatest health needs of their community. Honorees were awarded for creating programs that helped prevent underlying health problems and more. A total of $301,350 in grant funding was awarded to non-profit organizations whose work has helped improve access to health care, chronic disease education, and youth development. “Working together with organizations in our community to better lives and build a healthier Inland Empire is one way that we practice our core value of stewardship,” said Linda McDonald, Dignity Health Inland Empire, Vice President, Mission Services. In 2017, Dignity Health was able to fund more than $4.8 million in grant awards to nonprofit organizations in California, Arizona and Nevada. “St. Bernardine and Community Hospital are pleased to contribute to programs that provide important resources to the underserved, such as access to permanent housing for the homeless, shelter and legal support for victims of domestic violence and access to free preventive health care for those without a regular source of care,” said McDonald.
