Riverside National Cemetery and the March Air Field Museum are proud to announce a local partnership with the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation in support of character development in education! On March 6, 2018, secondary school educators are invited to attend an all-day Medal of Honor Character Development Training at the museum. Registration is required, and space is limited to 150 educators. The session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided. There is no cost for attendance. Middle and high school teachers from all subject areas along with counselors, coaches, and administrators are welcome. Participants are additionally eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of a classroom substitute, with submission of an invoice.

The Medal of Honor Character Development Program (CDP) enables educators across the country to teach their students the values embodied in the Medal: courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and patriotism. The full-day training workshop offers educators the opportunity to learn more about the CDP and receive all the materials they need to teach the program in their classrooms.  This flexible cross-curricular resource uses the oral histories of Medal of Honor recipients, with a focus on how students can use these examples of courage, commitment, sacrifice, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism to influence and change their own communities.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. The Navy Medal of Honor was the first to be struck on December 21, 1861. This was quickly followed by the Army version of the award on July 12, 1862. Today, there are three different types of the Medal of Honor: the original simple star-shaped medal first established in 1862 which the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard have retained; a wreath version designed in 1904 for the Army; and an altered wreath version for the Air Force, designed in 1963 and adopted in 1965. The Medal is presented to Recipients by the President of the United States.
