Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s (ARMC) resident physicians gathered on Friday, May 19, 2017, for the hospital’s 12th Annual Resident Research Day to present their research findings to the hospital administration and staff members, as well as to the public.

Residents from every one of the hospital’s training programs participated, with 64 submissions spanning case reports highlighting unusual presentations of unique cases of clinical interest, to prospective controlled trials seeking to determine the effectiveness of novel interventions to benefit patient care. In addition, this was the first year the hospital partnered with an outside organization, the California University of Science and Medicine (CalMed), an emerging medical school in the Inland Empire.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to be able to partner with CalMed this year,” said Dr. David Lanum, chairman of Family Medicine at ARMC. “In addition, the number of highly innovative original research projects that suggest significant changes for improvement in how we practice medicine across multiple specialties was at an all-time high for this event.

A panel of 14 judges evaluated the presentations and at a later date will present awards with first place earning $1000; second place $750 and third place $500.

Notable submissions included case studies on “Alarming Increase in Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) and Related Burn Injuries: A Serious Unregulated Public Health Issue,” which analyzed 25 patients admitted to ARMC to treat burn injuries resulting from ENDS malfunction; “A Comparative Study on Smoking Cessation Methods,” which analyzed the most successful smoking cessation options available at ARMC through its Quit Clinic community outreach program; and “Evaluation of the Patient Centered Medical Home Model Through the Adherence to Screening Mammographies,” examining the success rates of attending a screening mammography both before and after the registry was in place illustrating a significant increase in the successful completion of a screening mammogram after the institution of a patient registry.

ARMC is a university-affiliated teaching health care facility with 10 residency programs and more than 150 residents. ARMC regularly showcases work done by its resident physicians to help increase participation in regional research efforts.
