VOP: Dear Editor

By Herman Hilkey, Past Planning Commissioner, City Council, Mayor of Grand Terrace

Dear Editor, In reviewing the voter’s guide it is apparent Stanckiewitz is taking credit for all successes of GT. The NEW Stater Bros Store was started in 1991 when then Mayor Byron Matteson, Gene Carlstrom, and Hugh Grant started the effort. The excitement was carried to fruition by Maryetta Ferre and Lee Ann Garcia. For Stanckiewitz to claim it to be his success is arrogant, he just arrived. The wonderful new Grand Terrace High School was started in 1990 by a group of parents called “PFH” by then Colton School staff. This group started the movement in 1990-1997 to demand a high school in Grand Terrace. Then Colton Schools Superintendent Dr. Herbert Fischer responded with plans for a new high school in 1996 to serve the heavily student impacted south side of Colton School District (GT, Reche Canyon, LaLoma Hills, South Colton). As the years passed Kent Taylor kept the dream alive in spite of obstacles by the Colton School Boards from 2004 – 2012 and the dream finally became reality with the election and support of Roger Kowalski and Dan Flores. Stanckiewitz even forgot the recent effort of parents that kept the name of Grand Terrace High? The land the Grand Terrace High School is built on was secured by Tom Schwab and GT Redevelopment Agency, that Stanckiewitz campaigned against, when Edison faced demise. Stanckiewitz had absolutely nothing to with this school, he showed up when the paint was drying and took credit. The 215 Freeway widening was negotiated in 1992-1998 when I represented GT on SANBAG (agency that controls freeway construction) but for some reason OUR improvements were moved after the demands of Rialto, Fontana, Yucaipa and San Bernardino County when Stanckiewitz took over. Outside Cities and County politicians want Stanckiewitz re-elected because they got the freeway money from Measure “I” that was scheduled for the 215 Freeway in Grand Terrace. To claim credit for the work of others seems grossly arrogant. He could claim credit for the two white neon signs that don’t work. We need someone for Grand Terrace not another white neon sign that doesn’t work.
