Students Lean Toward Clinton During Mock Election

MORENO VALLEY>> Students from Vista del Lago High School have spoken during a mock election they took part in Oct. 11. The results of their mock election included a landslide victory for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for president at 70 percent, along with overwhelming support for taxing cigarettes and banning single-use plastic grocery bags statewide. The VLHS event is part of the MyVote California Student Mock Election, intended to help young people discover the importance of elections and the power of their votes in our democracy. The mock election allows students to have the opportunity of firsthand experience with the electoral process by allowing them a chance to make their voices heard on the candidates and issues important to them and their families. Thousands of schools participated in the event and statewide, Clinton won the vote with a 58 percent and Republican presidential nominee Donald J.Trump at 19.67 percent. “Students are not as disconnected from politics as many people might think,” said teacher Tami Depasse, in a previous City News Group Article. “They know that elections are about the future, and that the future is about them.” Moreno Valley Unified School District is the third-largest school district in Riverside County and the 23rd largest in California, educating more than 34,000 students in grades TK-12 at 40 schools. Our graduation rate exceeds both the state and national averages.
