Detective Devon Herrington of the Cal State San Bernardino Police Department received the Officer of the Year award at the 42nd annual Law Enforcement Recognition Dinner recently.

The award and dinner on May 31 were presented by the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce.

Herrington said she was honored to receive the Officer of the Year award and contributed her success to her superiors of the CSUSB University Police Department.

“I work for a command staff I deeply respect. They have created a professional and supportive working environment; one in which officers can be successful,” said Herrington. “I feel blessed to be working for an administration whose vision I believe in.”

“Detective Herrington is an excellent officer who cares for campus safety, for our faculty, students and staff,” said Nina Jamsen, the CSUSB police chief and public safety director. “She is an asset to our campus and UPD, and I’m pleased to have her on our team.”

Herrington began her law enforcement career as a detective division secretary and chief assistant for the Banning Police Department. In 2009, she entered the Riverside County Sheriff’s Academy and subsequently joined the CSUSB University Police Department.

As a member of the UPD, Herrington has set the standard for her colleagues, providing quality public service, acting courteous to both internal and external relations, and ensuring that the community and university have efficient law enforcement. Herrington worked patrol for three years before being assigned to the acting detective position. She was promoted to the rank of detective in 2012.

Under the general supervision of the administrative sergeant, Herrington independently handles general law enforcement and patrol duties, specialized work assignments, and assists or acts as the watch commander. Herrington has also overseen the police, parking and community service officers (CSO), in which she’s supervised and coordinated about 25 CSOs over the past year.

Herrington is assigned to the UPD Honor Guard, and a member and leader of the Critical Response Team.

Throughout her career, Herrington has exemplified courage and never hesitated when called upon in critical incidents. On April 4, 2017, Herrington was one of the first responders to the North Park Elementary School shooting, where she assisted with transferring about 600 students to Cal State San Bernardino. Prior to that, she responded to the violent riots and protests that occurred on the Cal State Fullerton campus and surrounding streets of October 2017.

Outside of CSUSB, Herrington is in charge of the registration list and compliance of all sexual offenders, works closely with the FBI and Joint Regional Intelligence Center, and is currently a terrorist liaison officer.

Herrington is also involved within community functions such Coffee with a Cop, public training program focused on the usage of pepper spray, and primary coordinator of the annual two-week CSO Academy.
