Raquel Ruiz represented Colton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155 at the 76th Girls State Session that took place from June 24th through June 29th, at Claremont McKenna College.
She joined approximately 500 delegates in a life-changing week developing leadership skills, learning about state and local government processes and interacting with the other delegates.
Upon return, Raquel stated that she had spent an amazing week learning about government and how it works in our democracy. She was not successful in getting the school board position she applied for, but instead was a member of the City Council for the City of Bass. Due to her artistic abilities, she designed the City logo for the flag and seal.

Her biggest take from her experience at Girls State was that no matter how big or small a position is in whatever role in a job or life it is worthwhile if there is dedication and passion when completing it. The power of sisterhood and young women was truly a remarkable experience.
On April 27th, a Tea/Orientation was held at Unit 155 for the 40 delegates selected to represent the Auxiliary Units from the surrounding area in District 25 which covers San Bernardino County. The delegates were able to meet, be informed of what would be experienced while attending Girls State, and enjoy a great lunch provided by the Auxiliary Units.
