Changes to Student Meal Distribution

San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is making changes to how it distributes student meals in light of rising temperatures. Since Monday, May 11, families may pick up student meals from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. only.

“We want to make sure that we continue to put the health and safety of our students and families first,” Safety/Emergency Manager Eric Vetere said. “It’s not just about COVID-19. We also want to make sure that our students have nutritious food that is safe to eat and that they are not at risk for heat-related illnesses.”

With daytime temperatures rising, SBCUSD decided the best option was to limit meal distribution to the cooler, morning hours. This will allow families time to return home and store the free meals properly before temperatures become dangerous.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, there will be a one-time change in meal distribution. Student meals will not be available on Monday, May 25. Instead, families can pick up student meals on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. This is a one-time change, and meal distribution will resume on Mondays and Wednesdays in June.

SBCUSD will continue to distribute free breakfast and lunch for students at designated school sites for the foreseeable future. Families are able to pick up several meals at one time between 9 and 11 a.m.
