Over 600 students auditioned to participate in the Southern California Vocal Association 2019 Honor Choir. Mia Hawat is a Junior at Canyon Springs High School and completing her 3rd year in Madrigals, the top performing vocal ensemble. She is the section leader for the 1st sopranos. Mia’s Southern California Vocal Association Honor Choir audition scored a perfect score of 100.

Mia serves on two club boards; event planner for Interact, and social historian for Choir Club, and a newly inducted member for National Honor Society. Mia is also a part of the Cougar Canyon Regiment’s Color Guard. She is also an IB and AP student at Canyon Springs. Mia made her musical debut at Vista Heights Middle School with the role of the Baker’s Wife in “Into The Woods,” the following year she also played as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid.”

Her freshman year of high school, she received the role of Kelsi in Canyon Springs production of “High School Musical,” the first musical to be put on in over a decade. Her sophomore year, Mia also got to study with Deke Sharon, the musical arranger for the “Pitch Perfect” movies, through Riverside City College. Over the summer, Mia was involved in the MVUSD “Lift To Rise” summer choral camp, and received multiple solos.

“I would like to thank my choir director, Mrs. Smith, my vocal coach, Mrs. Jackson, my principal Mrs. Kerr, Dr. Kedziora and the VAPA coordinator, Mr. Solomon for all the opportunities they have given me," she said. "Without your support, I would not be where I am.”

Canyon Springs Choir Director Scarlet Smith says, "Mia is gifted with such an amazing talent. This talent goes beyond just having a wonderful singing voice. She understands how to express music in the way the composers intended it to be, making it come alive. Mia is driven and dedicated to her craft. I am proud of the progress she is making and I know she will go far in her musical endeavors."
