San Bernardino County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig is honored to announce the promotion of Battalion Chief Darrayl Felgar to Division Chief, assigned to Division 11 (Training, Safety & Special Operations). This division maintains the training and certification for all of County Fire’s personnel and has established new certification levels in wild land training and implements all mandated State and Federal Training. Chief Felgar has spent 30 years of full-time service with the County of San Bernardino. Prior to joining County Fire in 1985, he started as a Paid-Call Firefighter at the Wrightwood Fire Department in April of 1984, now part of Division 2 of County Fire. The following year he was hired as a full-time Firefighter with the Central Valley Fire Protection District (Division 1). Felgar has climbed the ranks from Paid-Call Firefighter to Divison Chief. He has also been a member of multiple specialty teams, including Urban Search and Rescue, the Swift Water Rescue team and the Hazardous Materials team. Since 1998 he has been sharing that knowledge with future generations of firefighters at the Sewell Training Center. He has been involved in the majority of new programs or committees developed to move County Fire forward. Chief Felgar spent 17 years as a faculty instructor at Crafton Hills College Fire Academy and 15 years as a Multi-Agency Truck Academy instructor. While no longer teaching with the two schools, he is still involved with the Crafton Hills College Fire Academy helping to develop Educational Bridge Programs. “The Division is focusing on employee development for both entry level fire and emergency medical services positions as well as promotional training.” stated Darrayl Felgar. “Expanding our wildland emergency response programs remains a priority. I look forward to keeping that momentum going.” Division 11 responsibilities include the oversight of all training and safety operations, management of the department’s emergency medical services, and all aspects of wild land firefighting, to include the professional and inmate hand crew programs, and the heavy equipment progam (including the Dozers). Darrayl and his wife Barbara, along with their two sons, reside in Wrightwood. When not working, Darrayl likes to participate in outdoor activities with his family. In the winter, he volunteers as a USSA ski race coach and spends the summers mountain biking with his kids.
