COLTON>> Daniel C. Zamorano Sr., 82-year-old army veteran was honored on Thursday, April 6 with a military banner in Colton near G and Colton Street. Zamorano Sr. was in the United States Army for eight years and was in the Army Reserves for another three years following. He joined the military during a time when the United States Draft System was in full effect for World War II. Instead of being drafted to fight in World War II, he was assigned to fight in Korea but was ultimately stationed in Germany. Zamorano Sr. was honorably discharged from the United States Army due to a back injury, which was sustained after he was hit by a personnel carrier. Outside of the army, his daughter Regina describes her father as a “family man.” Born during the Depression in the 1930's in a home in Colton off of Congress Street, Zamorano grew up in poverty. Regina recalls one of the many stories her father has told her about his time growing up in the city. “He was born during the Depression, and he would tell us people would go places to get food because they were in poverty at that time," Regina said. She also added that due to his circumstances it forced him to “learn a lot and grow up very fast.” Later in life, Zamorano Sr. had six children as well as grandchildren. Most importantly, he is a dedicated Christian. Before Zamorano became disabled, he had many hobbies, which included his love for going deer hunting. Out of the many messages that Zamorano Sr conveyed to his daughter, the one that was always consistent was, “hard work always pays off." Zamorano Sr. lived his life by this motto, made evident throughout his career in the army and in his life after, in which he has succeeded at being a loving father and grandfather.
