Registration is now open for the 5th Annual Walk to Remember-Inland Empire, which will take place Saturday, Oct. 18, at Cal State San Bernardino and commemorates the lives of the hundreds of thousands of families affected by the passing of a baby during pregnancy or infancy, or through stillbirth. The event, a 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) walk, starts at 8 a.m. with check-in and onsite registration at the lawn in front of the John M. Pfau Library at CSUSB, with the memorial ceremony to follow at 9:30 a.m. Registration, which can be done online at http://www.active.com/san-bernardino-ca/walking/5th-annual-walk-to-remember-inland-empire-2014, is $25 in advance through Saturday, Oct. 11, and $30 the day of the event. Parking is free in Lot C. All proceeds from the walk will provide local hospitals with memory boxes and photography supplies, families with Sibling Comfort packages, assist those in need with end-of-life fees, establish support avenues for those suffering a loss, and sponsor a perinatal comfort care program. The walk is sponsored by the CSUSB Institute for Child Development and Family Relations. Two Cal State San Bernardino graduates – Amanda Balderrama (B.S. nursing, 2003) and Sarah Miles (B.A. human development, 2006) – founded the non-profit organization, Walk to Remember-IE, in January 2010 after experiencing their own tragedies; each lost a son. October is nationally recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Every October, Walk to Remember-Inland Empire is held in observance of the month. The event gives families, loved ones, friends, supporters and medical professionals a place to remember and celebrate each baby’s life, no matter how short.
