Drug Alternative Program Landscape Improvements

Drug Alternative Program (DAP), a 12-18 month program for men addicted to drugs, has been a part of this community for the past 28 years. They operate a commercial landscaping business as part of the work therapy program for the men. They were hired to maintain Rollins Park for several years. They volunteered their services to beautify the thoroughfare on Barton Road. The City of Grand Terrace awarded them a Certificate of Appreciation for their contribution to the beautification project for the city. The program owns four homes in a two- block area. Landscape improvements are being made at the transition home, 11810 Kingston Street, by Cliff Harris, President, and the clients. To be drought friendly, DAP has replaced the lawn with a rock garden that was designed and created by Cliff and the men. Kendrick Mobley, a member of the program, shares, "Through the work therapy program here at DAP, we show how God has changed our lives. Mr. Harris is an excellent teacher showing us that hard work is a building block for positive character. Daily he gives specific instructions to begin and finish our tasks. We have learned the important of details. By working with a team in a safe environment and learning new skills through on-the-job training, there is no limit to what we can accomplish after completing the program. I’m blessed to be at DAP!" Through these projects and the hard work of the clients, they are able to form a sense of pride in being involved in the work from start to finish. This builds their self-esteem in preparing them for work when they leave the program. "This project has been very exciting to me," says Brian Brockway. "It’s great seeing it all come together with my help, to accomplish a job that I have never done before. Through Mr. Harris’ training, I have learned to be more patient. It took time to finish this project that looks so amazingly beautiful. It’s also exciting because every client has worked and put a piece of this 'gigantic puzzle' together. I am proud to be a part of designing and constructing this rock garden. It is the best looking yard in Grand Terrace."
