Sunnymeadows Elementary School recently held a School Science Fair on Monday, Feb. 9, in which third, fourth, and fifth graders participated. All grades below third participated in a group project amongst the classrooms. About 250 projects were displayed and all parents, staff and community members were invited to attend. According to the principal of Sunnymeadows Elementary School, Latrice Thomas, various teachers also conducted experiments that went hand-in-hand with some of the students' projects. “It was another successful year,” Principal Thomas shared. “This was the second year that we have done the science fair and participation and attendance increased by approximately twenty-five percent.” The school reinstated the science fair just last school year. This year, there were about 350 people that attended. Some examples of various questions the students based their projects around were: Which Conditions Cause Bananas to Ripen More Quickly?, Which LED Light bulbs are the Most Efficient?, Which Materials Can Cause Alum Crystal to Glow?, Will Red Cabbage Dye Cheesecloth?, Which Substance Dissolves the Fastest?, When Mixed with Mentos Which Soda Will Create the Highest Shooting Stream? “The students had to study a problem using the scientific method. We encouraged the students not to do models, but to actually study a problem. So they were very creative,” Principal Thomas said. There were 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each grade. For third grade, the first place winner was Adrianna Madrigal, second place was Karissa Gonzalez, and third place was Anthony Richardson. “There were additional third place winners: Jesley Ulloa, Crystal Garcia and Angelina Archuleta,” Principal Thomas added. For the fourth grade level, first place went to Benathan Arce, while second place went to Leiloa Sandoval and third place went to Luis Angel and Hailey Gatheright. The fifth grade level first place went to LaRay Epson, second place went to Sofia Torres, while third place went to America Navarro.
