Coltonite David Huntoon was honored this past summer, on July 28 by his family, friends, and Colton for his service in the military. Huntoon, born and raised in Colton, graduated from Colton High School in 1966. According to his daughter Julie Huntoon, he currently resides in the same house where he was raised. While growing up, Huntoon was very involved with racing. In fact, according to Julie, he built his very own racecar that Miller’s Honey Company sponsored in which he later worked for after his service. “He raced right here at the Orange Show Speedway,” she explained. “He’s very good at it.” About two years after graduating, Huntoon was drafted into the Army where he served as a Convoy Driver in Vietnam. He was discharged in 1969. Although Huntoon was aware that he was receiving a military banner that day, he was surprised with the idea prior to the ceremony. Julie explained that she printed another copy of his banner. Then, on Father’s Day the whole family surprised him with the copy of his very own Military Banner and explained that he will have one installed for the whole Colton community to see. “He was almost in tears,” she said. “He’s not an emotional person so we all knew just how much it really meant to him.” Huntoon’s military banner can be seen at the first pole, southwest of 9th and D Street in Colton. It’s only about a block and a half from Huntoon’s residence. Julie added, “He walks to pay his utility bill just so he can walk by and see his banner.” According to Julie, the Huntoons have several relatives that have served in the military including his father who served in World War II and his brother who served in Vietnam, as well. “He’s always been proud of his service,” she said. Most of the Huntoon family and friends made it out to watch his military banner be officially installed. “He was telling everyone who would listen about his own military banner,” Julie chuckled. “It was a really good day.”
