Voice of the People: Dear Editor

By Herman Hilkey, Past Planning Commissioner, City Councilmember, Mayor of Grand Terrace

Dear Editor: We, as a community, decided years ago that we did not want political signs littering our streets for months before an election. We made a law that prevented the onslaught of political signs 30 days before the election. We followed it because it was OUR rule. Outsiders running for Assembly, Senate and U.S Congress were above our little town rules and ignored them. Grand Terrace residents follow this rule; all BUT ONE, and surprisingly that one person wants to be Mayor of Grand Terrace, Stanckiewitz. Because he doesn’t like that rule, he does not follow it, yet he wants to be mayor. He did not like the Grand Terrace Redevelopment Agency until he destroyed it. Then he realized he had killed the Golden Goose. This community said, “NO” to new taxes twice, just last week it was reported he told the City Council, “Utility Taxes often pass the second time they are presented to the community.” Just a few years ago he placed on the ballot a NEW tax that failed by 63%. At that time did not like the rules of transparency in government so he did not tell the public we had over $300,000 in checks and receivables. Now here we go again? In his arrogance he gave two white neon billboards that don’t work? Doesn’t the broken white neon billboard make you swell up with pride every time you see it? His newest plan is to hire movie consultants to make a $30,000 commercial of Grand Terrace. This guy is now out of touch with the true heart of Grand Terrace. Check out his glossy political flyer. ALL his supporters are from out of town --- County and State politicians! We need someone from Grand Terrace, not another white neon sign that doesn’t work.
