Healthy GT, a subcommittee of the Foundation of Grand Terrace, held an informational nutrition class that was free to the public on Sunday, April 12. Starting at 10 a.m., community members started to pile into the Azure Hills Church Fellowship Hall to start the class which included an informational lecture from Martina Tomarere from School of Allied Health Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, newly added Healthy GT Board Member Dr. Shirley Tan, and three master students: Liz Cazares, Julie Jones, and Sloan Vlahos from Loma Linda School of Public Health, who did the food demo. After they cooked the food that was sponsored by the Loma Linda Market, they then served to all the attendees. “The actual class was about how to shop at a grocery store…about how to shop healthy and save money,” Sally McGuire of Healthy GT explained. Special tricks were offered about how to shop healthy, information was provided on the different portion sizes of one’s plate, and much more useful information about healthy food vs. unhealthy food was given. About 20 community members participated in the class that Sunday, not only receiving valuable tips and information on nutrition and healthy grocery shopping, but also enjoying a free lunch courtesy of Healthy GT and Loma Linda Market. According to McGuire, Dr. Tan planned and organized the class together very quickly. McGuire and the rest of Healthy GT wanted to give a big thanks to Dr. Tan, Martina Tomarere, the three students from Loma Linda School of Public Health, Azure Hills Church and everyone involved with the planning and organizing of the class.
