Grand Terrace>> Emmy-winning Meteorologist Crystal Egger visited Grand Terrace View Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 8 to give a presentation about her career while also teaching the students about weather. Egger was invited to the school to give a presentation on weather to a group of students who were learning about weather in their classes. Debbie Kairis-Wright, a childhood friend of Egger and volunteer at Grand Terrace View Elementary School, organized the assembly for the students. Wright called Dr. Joseph Adeyemo, Principal of Grand Terrace View Elementary School, and told him about her idea to invite Egger to her alumnus school and host a presentation for the students. Adeyemo said he was excited about the idea and loved the presentation. “I know the students were learning about the weather and I wanted them to see that they can follow their dreams and goals just like Crystal,” Wright said. “This has been a dream of Crystal since she was 13 and she set her mind to it. I want the kids to see her drive and see they can do it, too.” Egger taught students about the weather patterns and how the weather affects their environment. She also shared with students her journey to becoming an Emmy-winning meteorologist and how important her education was to her career with a focus on science and math. “Be excited about science and math. You never know what you’re going to be down the road,” said Egger. “I didn’t know I was going to study meteorology but I did like science and math, so there’s a lot of ways you can learn something and most importantly be kind.” Egger also encouraged the students to participate in her presentation by asking questions and allowing students to answer in order to receive a prize from her. She also invited seven students to the front with her to give a seven-day weather report just like she does on TV. “I thought the presentation was fantastic. Mrs. Egger is a wonderful role model for our students, especially our girls,” said Lisa Cvikotn, a teacher on assignment at Grand Terrace View Elementary School. Egger stated that as a mother she understands the importance of children becoming engaged in learning and that she is fortunate to be able to return to her hometown and educate children on the weather and tell them about her journey through education. To her, this opportunity is just the “icing on the cake” for her hard work. “I have to give such a big thanks to Crystal for coming down here, even with her busy schedule. She really loves giving back to her community,” Wright said.
