REDLANDS >> Construction and installation of shade sails at Sylvan Park began Monday, April 4, and will run through April 8. During construction, the playground equipment, including the toddler section, will be closed to the public to ensure public safety during the digging of the shade sail post holes, setting of the posts, and curing of the cement. Closure is expected from April 4-8. The remainder of the park will remain open. On July 21, 2015, the City Council awarded a $238,410 contract for the 2015 Shade Sail Installation Project to Southern Hemisphere Shades of Sacramento Construction. The project is funded by proceeds from the Palmetto Grove sale, which included allocations for parks and recreation improvements throughout the City. As part of the project, shade sails - an engineered canvas cover tensioned between several anchor points - will be installed over the playground equipment and picnic tables at Community Park, Ford Park, Brookside Park, Crafton Park, Texonia Park, Israel Beal Park, Jennie Davis Park, Heritage Park and Sylvan Park. This project is being jointly managed by the City’s Quality of Life and Municipal Utilities and Engineering departments. The City will make a concerted effort to minimize disruptions for residents and patrons in the project area. Signs will be posted indicating dates when work will occur and when park equipment will not be accessible between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shade sails will provide coverage for the playground equipment, encourage year-round use, and enhance the quality of the park.
