Southern California Readies for 12th Annual "Dump the Pump" Day

San Bernardino>> Promotion of public transportation will be observed June 15, 2017, also known as National "Dump the Pump" day. This event continues to be a global effort to encourage the use of public transportation as the price of fuel fluctuates.

The annual event began as oil prices began to steadily increase in 2005. There have been notable benefits to public transportation that allow consumers to reduce their dependency on fuel.

Many businesses are to participate during this annual event and by utilizing such accommodations; the public sector can save economically, environmentally, and reduce communal congestion on the road.

One of the participants of this event includes the Metrolink train. Every person on Facebook who pledges to take the Metrolink on June 15th instead of his or her vehicle will receive a free round trip for that day. Pledgers must have registered between June 7th-9th.

“The annual savings is $9,797 for a person who switches his or her daily commute by car to taking public transportation," according to the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) June Transit Savings Report.  “Individuals who ride public transportation instead of driving can save, on average, more than $816 per month.”

There are other benefits to utilizing public transportation during this day. One of those benefits is reducing fuel emission emitted into the air. For years, the waste of car emissions has accumulated within our biosphere, causing climate change and other environmental damages.

Since 2010 the spiraling percentages of coal and oil usage have been steadily decreasing, however, emissions of CO2 and other chemicals are confined within the atmosphere. The amounts of accumulated emissions from vehicles as well as other damaging factors are considered to be responsible for the hotter, drier conditions of recent temperatures. By introducing methods of transit that reduce emitted fuel, potential stabilization of emissions is attainable.

Another benefit to this event is social integration, as many people will be able to commute with others. Community growth is enhanced, as commuters will invest in traveled cities. This will also provide the opportunity for many commuters to become acquainted with the public transportation commute for possible future inquiries.

By providing such promotions, the use of public transit may seem like more of a considerable option as fuel prices will continue to rise.
