More Jobs but Unemployment Rate Increases

Nonfarm employment has increased 21,400 over the month and increased 43,200 over the year the unemployment rate in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA was 6.4 percent in October 2015, up from a revised 6.1 percent in September 2015, and below the year-ago estimate of 7.7 percent. According to the State of California Employment Development Department. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 5.7 percent for California and 4.8 percent for the nation during the same period. The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in Riverside County, and 6.2 percent in San Bernardino County. Between September 2015 and October 2015, total nonfarm employment increased from 1,328,200 to 1,349,600, a gain of 21,400 jobs. Agricultural employment grew by 500 jobs. Construction experienced the most gains in employment over the year, adding 9,800 jobs. Specialty trade contractors (up 8,800) was responsible for about 90 percent of the employment expansion in this sector. Construction of buildings grew by 1,000 jobs. Government added 8,100 jobs to its payrolls over the month. Local government educational services increased by 6,400 jobs, or 79 percent of the month-over growth for the sector. State government educational services added 1,700 jobs. Other notable month-over job gains were found in trade, transportation, and utilities (up 4,200), construction (up 3,100), professional and business services (up 2,400), and educational and health services (up 2,100). Other services was the only industry to experience a job loss over the month, slashing 800 jobs. Mining and logging and information reported no job growth. Between October 2014 and October 2015, nonfarm payrolls increased by 43,200 in the region. Agricultural employment reported no growth. Seven other industries posted job gains over the year. The most notable gains were in professional and business services (up 8,700) and trade, transportation, and utilities (up 6,100) Other service, Repair and Maintenance Personal and Laundry Services, are (down 600) and mining and logging (down 100) posted employment losses over the year.
