Rodney Borger M.D., chairman of Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department, recently received the 2015 Emergency Department Director of the Year Award for his exemplary collaborative relationships with nursing and ancillary departments to implement and improve operational and clinical standards. Blue Jay Consulting, in collaboration with the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Medicine Foundation, awards the Emergency Department Director of the Year Award to an individual who has demonstrated contributions to the emergency department in the following categories: collaboration with nursing; quality patient care; operational effectiveness; education; community service; and a synergistic approach to leadership within the hospital. Since 2002, Dr. Borger has overseen a steady growth in emergency room visits at ARMC, from 60,000 to approximately 120,000 this past year. ARMC’s emergency department is among the busiest in the state, and this rapid growth prompted Dr. Borger to work collaboratively with the ED nurse manager to devise a patient flow system, improving door-to-doctor wait times while reducing the number of patients leaving without being seen. “I am honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Borger. “It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.” Passionate about education, Dr. Borger was the founding chairman of the Emergency Medicine Training Program at ARMC in 2004. In 2009, he created the first comprehensive post-graduate Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Fellowship on the West Coast. Widely recognized for his work in the community, Dr. Borger was instrumental in forming the San Bernardino County Medical Reserve Corps., a community-based, organized group of health care professionals and community citizens who donate their time and expertise to prepare for and respond to emergencies. Dr. Borger also served as San Bernardino County Medical Society president in 2009-2010.
