REDLANDS >> The City of Redlands invites residents to apply for openings on the Human Relations and Parks and Recreation commissions and the A.K. Smiley Public Library Board of Trustees. The deadline for filing applications is Aug. 4. The positions available are non-salaried positions and members are appointed by the City Council. The Human Relations Commission was established to foster peaceful relations among persons of different races and national origins. This commission serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council and to aid the City in achieving better human relations by providing assistance to all persons or groups in promoting good will and better relations among all people. The Human Relations Commission meets on the third Monday of odd-numbered months at 5:45 p.m. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission recommends to the City Council policies for the acquisition, development, maintenance and improvement of parks, public trails and open space areas, and for the planting, care and removal of landscaping and amenities in all parks, public trails and open space areas. In addition, this commission’s duties relating to recreation include: using the commissioners’ skills, knowledge and experience to assist and advise the City Recreation Division staff; keeping the public informed about the City’s recreation program; serving as a forum for the promotion of activities for the Recreation Division and the City’s community center; and serving as a forum for residents’ suggestions, reactions, opinions, interests and needs regarding the City’s Recreation Division and its programs. The Parks and Recreation Commission meets bi-monthly on the second Thursday of odd-numbered months at 4 p.m. The Library Board of Trustees consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. The trustees hold office for three-year terms. One member of the board is selected as president of the board. The State Education Code mandates that “the public library shall be managed by a board of library trustees.” The board may make and enforce all rules, regulations and bylaws necessary for the administration, government and protection of the library and all property belonging thereto. The board may administer trusts created for the library and receive gifts by devise or bequests, hold property in trust in California or elsewhere and dispose of property for the benefit of the library. Since 1922, the trustees have managed an endowment fund, income from which supplements and enriches the library’s programs, acquisitions and well-being. By City Council resolution in 1932 affirming Robert Watchorn’s Deed of Gift, the Library Trustees administer the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. In 2001, by City Council resolution, the trustees also administer the Redlands Municipal Museum. The Library Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. Residents interested in applying for these positions may request an application form from the City Manager's Office, City Hall, 35 Cajon St., Suite 200, by phone at 909-798-7510, or online at www.cityofredlands.org
