SBCUSD Honors Twelve Students

The San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education honored 12 students in the district at the board meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Three students were chosen from each school: Carmack and Harman Schools, George Brown Jr. Elementary, Cole Elementary, and North Verdemont Elementary School. Students recognized from George Brown Jr. Elementary School include: Lily Alvarez, Destiny Alexus-Laporta, and Leslie Saucedo. Alvarez is a fifth grader known to “use logic to draw conclusions and solve problems.” While she is not sure of what career or what she wants to do in the future, her teachers are confident that her intelligence will take her far in life. Alexus-Laporta is also a fifth grader. She is known for her noteworthy writing skills. Although her dream is to be a fashion designer, everyone is confident she would be successful with whatever she chooses to pursue. Saucedo is a sixth grader known for her character. Not only does she work hard at whatever project she’s doing, she has a positive attitude toward it. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Cole Elementary students awarded include: Zulema Betancourt, Elija Donaldson, and Jayana Northam. Betancourt is a fourth grader and the youngest student to be awarded at her school. She is known to be a “model student.” Not only is she successful in class, she exceeds the expectations and goes above and beyond. Her dream is to go to college to become a lawyer. Donaldson is a fifth grader who has recently scored above the eighth grade level on a state-wide math test. His goal is to attend Yale and from there either become a teacher, police officer, or firefighter. Northam is a fifth grader, as well. She is known for her excellence in music and technology. Her dream is to attend New York College to study music. She currently plays the viola. North Verdemont Elementary School students awarded include: Qimon Bullocks-Brown, Bradley Chavez, and Ryan Hernandez. Bullocks-Brown is a sixth grader who realized at a young age that school and education is important to have opportunities for a bright future. Although he has not decided what he wants to do in the future yet, he plans to keep being engaged in school and his future. Hernandez is a sixth grader and is known for his kindness. He is always willing to help his classmates when needed. His dream career is to become a police officer. Chavez is a third grader and the youngest at his school to receive the award. Although he has been through some challenges in his life, he is determined and focused on helping people in his future. After school, Chavez plans to join the Navy where he wants to serve as a navigator. Carmack and Harmon Elementary Schools students who received awards include: Malaky Alford, Toribio Gonzales-Robles, and Daniel Mendoza-Cazares. Alford is a fifth grader known for his friendliness and positive attitude. One of his favorite things to do is watch NBA games, with a goal of becoming a basketball star in the future. Gonzales-Robles is also a fifth grader. He is known for his computer skills and strong language skills. One of his favorite things to watch movies and aspires to be a filmmaker soon. Fifth-grader Mendoza-Cazares doesn’t only love to watch animation, but he loves to draw as well. He also improves his keyboarding skills every day. With his drawing skills, he hopes to become an animator.
