The ghouls, goblins, witches, and even princesses of Colton gathered at Fleming Park for this year’s Halloween Festival. This is the first Colton Halloween Festival that was held at Fleming Park. In previous years, the event was held at the Gonzales Center. However, due to the popularity of the event it was moved to Fleming Park to have more room for all community members to attend. According to Parks and Recreation Coordinator Felipe Vega, the park was filled with over 1,700 community members, dressed in their spookiest costumes. The event began at 5 p.m. and traditional trick-or-treating and multiple activity booths with carnival style games, where kids could win various prizes and types of candy. Also, there was an area where kids could participate in arts and crafts. “We had all types of fun activities for kids of all ages,” Vega said. After all the tricking and treating, attendees were invited to stay in the park to enjoy a Halloween movie: Hotel Transylvania, which started at 7:45 p.m. Vega, who planned this event from beginning to end, said, “It was a really good night, all the kids seemed to be having a great time.” There was even a costume contest for those up to 12 years old to participate in. The three different categories included: cutest, scariest and funniest. There were 12 winners, either receiving 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in each category. “There were tons of kids in different costumes... even the older kids were dressed up,” Vega shared. Students from the city’s gymnastics class attended and performed one of their routines for attending community members. Vega added, “A big thank you goes out to all the Community Service Department staff... this wouldn’t have happened without their hard work and dedication.” He shared that the night was successful and was happy to see everyone was came out and made it a fun and safe community-oriented event.
