The city is seeking volunteers for a General Plan Steering Committee to advise the Planning Commission and City Council during the General Plan update. Residents who live within the city and its planning sphere are invited to submit an application. Candidates should have lived within the City or its planning sphere for at least three years. Six members will be chosen to represent specific disciplines, including Business/Real Estate; Education; Cultural Arts; Historic Resources; Parks and Trails; and Open Space and Agriculture. Another seven members will be selected from the city’s planning areas. With the exception of the Downtown and West End, applicants must live within the planning area they seek to represent. Other planning areas are: Lugonia; The Colony; University District; East Valley; and Highland/Canyon lands. Two additional members will be chosen to represent communities in the City’s planning sphere – Mentone and Crafton. Applicants in these areas should reside in the respective planning spheres. A primary representative and an alternate will be selected for each discipline and each planning area. The Steering Committee will serve in an advisory role to the Planning Commission and the City Council. The recommendations of the committee will be forwarded to the Planning Commission and City Council for their review and deliberation while considering the General Plan Update. The committee will meet a limited number of times over the two-year update period. The Committee’s activities will kick off in early August for the first meeting. In late August, the City will conduct public workshops that will seek to establish the “vision” of Redlands in 20 years. Additional meetings will be held throughout the fall and winter to determine the City’s opportunities and challenges, examine planning alternatives, and develop a preferred plan. The City will produce a draft plan in the summer of 2016 followed by a draft EIR. Final adoption of the plan is slated for July of 2017. Committee members are expected to bring perspectives from each respective discipline or planning area; review and understand background data and information; consider opportunities and challenges facing the City; discuss proposals and alternatives; provide thoughtful input; make recommendations to the approving authorities; pass knowledge and information to the community; and collaborate with fellow committee members in a respectful and considerate manner. Applicants should submit a completed application and a resume to the City Clerk’s Office before the deadline at 5 p.m. Friday, July 10. A link to a map showing the boundaries of each planning area is available at www.cityofredlands.org/gp recruiting. Applications are available on the City’s website at www.cityofredlands.org/gp recruiting or at the City Clerk’s Office at 35 Cajon St., Suite 4. Completed packets may be emailed to City Clerk Sam Irwin at sirwin@cityofredlands.org.
