Gil Navarro is running to represent California’s 47th District in the state assembly this November, challenging incumbent Cheryl Brown for the seat. Navarro, who currently represents the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District (SBVMWD)’s Division II covering Colton and portions of Bloomington, Fontana and San Bernardino, and said he has intentions to help the 47th District tackle drought challenges and create jobs within the District. “We have a severe drought in California today,” said Navarro. “I intend to convene a water conservation advising committee with industrial parks, school districts, the County of San Bernardino, all cities in the 47th Assembly District and all other interested parties.” California’s 47th Assembly District covers portions of the cities of Bloomington, Colton, Grand Terrace, Fontana, Muscoy, Rialto and San Bernardino. Additionally, Navarro, who served 7 years with the San Bernardino County Board of Education, said his concerns are unemployment, crime and the drought the state faces. “We need jobs, jobs, jobs,” said Navarro. “My effective approach is to develop incentives for businesses to move within the 47th Assembly District.” Navarro also said “there is no reason why we cannot use the current infrastructure of public services” to get members of the homeless population “back on their feet.” Navarro attended San Bernardino Community College and said he has been a student advocate for 20 years, specializing in special education, Section 504—which prohibits discrimination in schools based upon disability— suspensions and expulsions, representing students of all ages from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as community college and university students. He has been elected every two years to the San Bernardino County Central Committee by voters in the 47th District, Navarro explained, from 2002 through 2012. Communication is another priority for Navarro, he explained. “I intend to have an open and transparent communication (with) all the residents. I will be interacting with the community (and) working to solve problems, not creating problems by my inaction.”
