San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies responded to calls from Grand Terrace residents Monday morning, June 1, after damage was caused to the landscapes of several yards by a driver who was allegedly driving drunk. Deputies received reports of a reckless driver in the area of Michigan Avenue and Pico Street around 9:20 that morning, said Sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Bachman. Sheriff's reports detailed that the driver was traveling south on Michigan Avenue and lost control when he hit a dip in the road at Pico Street, Bachman said. Liz Cox, a Grand Terrace resident, was in her home office nearby when she heard a crash, she told the City News. According to Cox, witnesses who reported the incident and Sheriff's reports, said Bachman, the driver - a white male dressed in black shorts and wearing a black hat, and who Cox said looked to be about 30 years old - drove over a curb and several yards, damaging landscape and even tearing a tree from the ground, before crashing into a fire hydrant at the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Tanager Street. Bachman said reports showed witnesses reporting that the man had fled the scene; Cox corroborated, telling the City News that from her office window, she saw the man "stagger" from the scene of the collision. "I thought he might have been stunned from the accident," said Cox. Bachman verified Cox's claim that the man was later found by deputies hiding on the porch of another home in the area a couple houses down from the scene of the impact. Cox claimed she identified a large, gallon-sized jug of wine at the scene, estimating that approximately two inches of volume was left in the container. Bachman said the driver was reported as not being injured, though he was incoherent, she said. It was not immediately clear if the driver was taken into custody, though Bachman said it was likely that he was cited as it was indication that a complete sheriff's report would be forwarded to the district attorney's office. A clean up crew also responded to the scene, clearing away debris from the accident.
