REDLANDS>> Crafton Hills College is hosting The Herbivore Festival, a celebration of plant-based living, on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free event will include lectures, cooking demonstrations, performances, workshops, fitness activities, vendors, food and activities for kids. Dr. Hans Diehl, Founder of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute in Loma Linda, will present the keynote lecture, Breakthrough: Reversing Heart Disease with Fork and Knife at 12:15 p.m. Other topics include Comedy and Veganism: the power of humor for social justice, Vegan 101: It Ain't Your Parents’ Vegan, and Sustainability at Crafton Hills College. “Many people have heard of the benefits of a plant-based diet but just don’t know where to start," said Dr. Colleen Hinds, festival coordinator and assistant professor of kinesiology and health. "Well, here is the place to start. Come try the food, see how to prepare it, listen to tips and techniques on how to make the switch successfully, shop the cruelty-free, environmentally friendly products and meet other people who can help support you in your journey to health.” Although there will be lectures and cooking demonstrations throughout the day, the festival is not only focused on diet. There will also be workshops for the body: yoga, zumba and pilates; Harpist Jennifer Sparks and Dan McNay will provide music entertains and American Acrobats, a professional performance troupe and Ruby Red Belly Dancing, will perform. The event will also feature workshops for the mind: meditation and energy balancing; henna art and face painting; and a chance to shop with more than 170 vendors. Information about Crafton’s academic programs and how to enroll will also be available. Crafton Hills College is located at 11711 Sand Canyon Road in Yucaipa and parking will be free.
