GRAND TERRACE>> Senior citizens in Grand Terrace can look forward to a driver safety program Aug. 25 and 26 from 1-5 p.m., hosted and coordinated by the Grand Terrace Senior Center, located at 22627 Grand Terrace Rd. in Grand Terrace. The AARP Smart Driver safety program aims to help participants learn proven safety strategies and those who complete the program will be eligible for a discount on their car insurance. As space is limited, Jane Haines, president of the Grand Terrace Senior Center, urges seniors who would like to participate to register now by calling 909.824.1491, or by signing up at the center. The class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Please bring your driver’s license, AARP card if you have one and a check or cash for the payment. The AARP Smart Drive course offers information about the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate a vehicle more safely in today’s increasing challenging driving environment. “Cars have changed,” Haines said in a newsletter. “So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.” The course will also teach drivers how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots, how to maintain the proper following distance behind another car, the effects of medication on driving and the proper use of safety belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes and new technologies in cars. Grand Terrace Senior Center has served seniors and adults in the area since 1958. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call the office at 909.824.1491.
