Better Life Fitness to Hold Free Seminar

REDLANDS>> Fitness trainer and wellness educator Sam Benavides is inviting the public to attend a free seminar where he is presenting a presentation titled “The War On Our Health: Three Reasons We Need Lifestyle Intervention.” There will be two opportunities to attend including Wednesday, Oct. 12 at noon, and Thursday, Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Both will be at the Loma Linda University Drayson Center located at 25040 Stewart St. in Loma Linda. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? …" (Matthew 5:13.) It is a simple, yet powerful visual of how our lives, empowered by Christ, are to function on a spiritual level to better the lives of the people around us. Simply put, we are to enhance and positively influence our world by how we think, what we say and how we treat everyone with whom we come in contact. This is the principle of the golden rule that was to be embodied by and characterize a group of people: Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. But the last part of this scripture is what many of us may forget: “… It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (Matthew 5:13.) It is just like everything else that is good in this world, if it is mishandled, abused or unused, it is useless and ineffective for its intended purpose. With respect to salt, it becomes just another grain of sand. What about our physical bodies? How are Christians to influence positive, hopeful change with their health and outward appearance? Is there a relationship between a healthy soul and the body it occupies? Conversely, can a person who suffers from serious illness live up to their full spiritual potential of enhancing the people and the world around them? How do followers of Jesus Christ reflect God’s love in their physical bodies? Should Christians be concerned about strict issues of temperance in diet and physical health? 1 Peter 5:8 says: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 700,000 people die of heart disease every year. Add to this number the deaths from other lifestyle-related illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer and stroke, and that number climbs to more than 1.8 million people in the U.S. alone. Benavides said he believes thousands of Christians are being rendered ineffective or cut short in their mission to be the “salt of the earth” because of what appears to be an attack on “health” in our world today. “You cannot be a credible agent for health if you’re negotiating with disease,” Benavides said. “The world offers ‘healthcare’, God offers physical healing and renewal. Both cannot be truth – one is a counterfeit.” How can we tell the difference as it applies to the health of our physical bodies? What is causing so many people to succumb to deadly chronic illnesses? What can people in general, Christian and non-Christian, do to prevent from being a statistic? Think of the largest and primary source of salt on the planet – the ocean water. In order to extract the salt to be used for enhancing flavor, the water was boiled. This process of boiling would reveal both the quantity and quality of the salt in the water.
