Gloria Macías Harrison, clerk of the San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) Board of Trustees, has completed the Excellence in Trusteeship Program offered by the Community College League of California (CCLC). She was presented with the certification of completion at the Board’s regular meeting on Feb. 25. President of the Board John Longville said, “Trustee Harrison’s completion of this important program augments her role as Clerk of our Board of Trustees. The achievement demonstrates her ongoing commitment to our primary responsibility as stewards of a tremendous community resource. It is in the best interest of the SBCCD community that our Board of Trustees be as well informed as possible, and the CCLC is one of the best sources of such information.” “Ensuring that our Board is trained in the best practices of their offices ensures the quality, integrity and effectiveness of our programs and services and the financial stability of our institutions. The trustees have a complex role in a very demanding education system in California, and the CCLC helps a trustee do the best job possible,” explained Chancellor Bruce Baron. Trustee Harrison commented that “the program provides a solid foundation for being an effective board member, and for learning the specifics necessary for leadership in seven broad areas of competency, including accreditation, student success, ethics, and the Brown Act. The training provides trustees with tools that help clarify the Board’s role in supporting student success and serving our communities.” Gloria Macias Harrison was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2012, and serves Area 5. She became President of Crafton Hills College on July 1, 2000, and served until her retirement from that position on July 2, 2012. Vice President of Instruction at Crafton Hills College for six years, and Dean of Humanities at San Bernardino Valley College for three years, she also has over 20 years of teaching experience. Mrs. Harrison was a governor's appointee to the California Commission on the Status of Women and served on the California Council for Humanities and numerous state committees on education. Locally, she is a former member of The Community Foundation, Kiwanis, and currently involved with the San Bernardino Symphony Association, and the San Bernardino Valley College, Crafton Hills College Foundation and the KVCR Foundation. She belongs to many professional organizations and is the recipient of numerous awards. Mrs. Harrison received an Associate of Arts degree from San Bernardino Valley College, and her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Spanish Literature from the University of California, Riverside.
