Assemblymember Cheryl Brown (D – San Bernardino) and her husband Hardy Brown Sr. were the guests of honor at a jazzy event held last week. The couple was recognized at the San Bernardino Symphony’s “Jazz Nite” event Feb. 5 at the historic California Theatre in downtown, the Symphony’s home venue, for their contributions to local arts and education. "My husband and I were overjoyed with the celebration that our Symphony Board gave to us. It was a very special evening and we were truly honored to be recognized," said Assemblymember Brown. "It was also a great pleasure to be surrounded by old and new friends. Thank you for coming out to support us." “We [honored] them for all their efforts in arts and education in our area,” said San Bernardino Symphony’s Earleen Ferguson-Dudley. “In education and art, they have been champions for children this year,” explained Symphony Executive Director Dr. Anne Viricel. “We wanted to recognize someone in this city who stands out in terms of arts and education and how that relates to our youth.” Known for their long tradition of public service, both Assemblymember Brown and husband Hardy have also contributed to their community in another way – through the press. In 1980, the couple founded Brown Publishing Company, circulating the community newspaper the Black Voice News throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties. They have also created the California Black Media, founded in 2001, a network of 22 African-American newspapers and media enterprises throughout the state with the aim of informing, educating and advocating for the African-American community and promote minority-owned news organizations. “They have always provided really good and fair representation in this city through their media company,” Viricel said. “This, and basically all they’ve done for families in the area, was outstanding and it merited recognition.” Visitors enjoyed themed food stations and enjoyed smooth jazz provided by Cal State San Bernardino’s jazz ensemble, led by Dr. Bob Knop. Proceeds from the Mardi Gras-themed, “Louisiana Flavor” event will benefit the Symphony’s Music in the Schools program, which helps bring music education and events to area schools. Assemblymember Brown credited the Symphony itself as being one of the finest in the state. "I believe the San Bernardino Symphony is the best orchestra in the state of California and beyond," said Brown. "The quality of their performances amazes me. The theatre is beautiful and is on par with some of the best theatres in the nation. I hope the community will continue to support it."
