Cloverdale Elementary held their annual school science fair where students dove into the vast scientific world with their projects ranging from chemical and biological reactions to anything their imaginations could come up with. Three fifth graders and three fourth graders were chosen as finalists to represent Cloverdale at the District Science Fair.

The six finalists include fifth graders Monica Lopez (Gummy Bear Growth), Jorge Lucero (What’s Popping) and Iziah Moreno (Pozfizz Inflate) and fourth graders Viviana Giovannini (Grasses Favorite H2O), Gabriella Reyna (Got Bacteria?) and Jorley Dickey (What does Vinegar do to an egg?). According to Kathleen Ayala, the fifth grade level leader and organizer of the science fair, the entire fifth grade class of 105 students - including Cloverdale’s primary students, and some fourth grade participants followed the scientific method while either proving or disproving their projects’ hypothesis.

Fourth grader, Jorley Dickey, expressed excitement about her project when speaking with City News Group, "My favorite part was seeing the egg turn to rubber and my mom popping the egg and seeing the yolk was normal. I also loved being able to spend time with my family during the process."

Cloverdale's principal, Genaro García, expressed his pride in the school, "We are very proud of our Cloverdale Lions and their outstanding dedication on their science fair projects. They will represent us well at the upcoming district science fair and we wish them the best moving forward."

Ayala also explained that students were required to construct an abstract on their project, keep a journal with all their experiment trial findings, pictures of the process and step-by-step instructions on how they carried out the experiment, and lastly, create a poster board display for the fair.

Students from Cloverdale competed against their classmates at their school science fair. While judging has concluded, six Cloverdale students will go on to participate at the District science fair [TBA]. There, their projects will be judged again against other elementary and middle school students, with the winners moving on to the County science fair. Be sure to support Cloverdale and their six when the District fair opens up! Good luck to all of you!
