San Bernardino International Airport Continues Expanding Its Role in Regional Economic Growth

San Bernardino International Airport continues to strengthen its position as one of the Inland Empire's most important economic assets, building on decades of transformation from a former military installation into a growing center for aviation, logistics, and business investment. While passenger travel often receives the most public attention at airports, San Bernardino's greatest impact is increasingly found in cargo operations, aerospace development, and the thousands of jobs supported throughout the surrounding region.

The airport occupies the site of the former Norton Air Force Base, which served Southern California for nearly 50 years before closing in 1994. Rather than allowing the property to sit idle, local leaders envisioned a new future centered on economic development. Over the past three decades, that vision has steadily become reality as aviation businesses, aircraft maintenance companies, logistics firms, and distribution operations have established a presence at the airport. The redevelopment has helped transform what was once a military installation into an important contributor to the Inland Empire's economy.

The airport's growth also creates opportunities beyond aviation itself. Local restaurants, hotels, construction companies, transportation providers, and professional service firms all benefit from increased economic activity generated by airport operations. Educational institutions throughout the region are also working to prepare students for careers in aviation, engineering, aircraft maintenance, logistics, and business management, helping ensure a skilled workforce will be available as the industry continues to expand.

Airport officials continue working with regional economic development organizations to attract new investment while balancing long-term growth with responsible planning. As more companies recognize the Inland Empire's importance within national supply chains, San Bernardino International Airport is well positioned to play an increasingly significant role in supporting commerce and job creation.
